Oyo State Declares Public Holiday to Mark Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1446AH
Ibadan, Oyo State – The Oyo State government has announced that Monday, July 8, 2024, will be a public holiday to commemorate the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1446AH.
The declaration was made by Dotun Oyelade, the state’s Information Commissioner, on Thursday, July 4. Oyelade emphasized the significance of Hijrah, which marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, as an important event in Islamic history.
The statement reads:
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared Monday, 8th July 2024, a work-free day in the state.”
The government urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in the state and Nigeria as a whole. Additionally, it encouraged reflection on the teachings of Hijrah and the fostering of community spirit and solidarity.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation.”
