Shehu Sani Advises Tinubu on Avoiding Buhari’s Appointment Errors

Former Kaduna lawmaker Shehu Sani has advised President Bola Tinubu not to repeat the mistakes of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, in making appointments. Sani shared his thoughts during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Sani emphasized that President Tinubu should prioritize competence when selecting individuals for key positions if he wants to achieve positive results. He stressed that appointments based on merit are crucial for effective governance.

Reflecting on Buhari’s eight-year administration from May 2015 to May 2023, Sani pointed out that nepotism was rampant. Despite favoring friends and relatives for important roles, the administration failed to deliver significant results in areas like security, economy, education, and healthcare.

Sani highlighted that during Buhari’s tenure, ministers were rarely replaced or reshuffled, even when they underperformed. When changes were made, it took three to four months to appoint new ministers, which hindered effective governance.

This lack of action and retention of ineffective officials, according to Sani, damaged the careers of other capable individuals waiting for their turn. He mentioned that many officers were forced to retire to make way for a few selected people.

For Nigeria to move forward, Sani insisted that appointments should be based on competence rather than favoritism. He believes that this approach is essential for progress and effective management of the country’s affairs.

Additionally, Sani criticized political leaders from northern Nigeria, saying they have failed to use their power to address underdevelopment in the region. He noted that the 19 states in northern Nigeria have not seen significant improvement despite the political influence of their leaders.

Sani concluded by stating that the power held by these leaders has not been used to benefit the people of northern Nigeria. He called for a change in how political power is utilized to ensure it contributes to the region’s development.
