Borno Tragedy: Suicide Bombers Kill 30 and Injure 100 at Wedding and Funeral
Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, the Emir of the Gwoza local government area in Borno State, confirmed yesterday that multiple suicide bombings occurred in Gwoza town. The attacks targeted a wedding reception and a funeral.
The incidents happened in the afternoon and caused widespread panic. According to sources, over 30 people were killed, and more than 100 were injured. Many of the injured were taken to Maiduguri for medical treatment.
Timta explained that the first attack was carried out by an unidentified woman who brought two children to a wedding reception. She detonated explosives, killing herself and many others. Shortly after, another suicide bomber attacked a nearby funeral. A third explosion occurred just minutes later, resulting in more casualties.
Timta noted that this information is preliminary and that further details will be provided as they become available.
Ahmed Usman Jaha, a representative for the Gwoza/Chibok/Damboa federal constituency, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the deceased while wishing the injured a quick recovery.
Gwoza, located in southern Borno near the Cameroon border, was previously declared Boko Haram Territory after being captured by insurgents. Hundreds of people were killed before the town was liberated by troops.
