Peter Obi Appeals to Tinubu for Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has urged President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and others who are still in detention.
Speaking to journalists in Onitsha on Saturday, Obi emphasized that there is no justification for Kanu’s continued detention, especially since the court had granted him bail.
He stressed that the government must respect the rule of law, as it is a fundamental principle that must be upheld. Obi also mentioned that he intends to engage in dialogue with all groups advocating for their rights.
Obi appealed to the government to release everyone in similar situations and engage in discussions with them. He highlighted that Nigeria is a democratic nation and should not act arbitrarily or outside the law.
He also called on Nigerian leaders to strengthen efforts in securing the country, stating that the primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the safety of lives and property. Obi pointed out that security is essential for people to live in any nation because no one can stay in an insecure environment.
Expressing concern about the rising insecurity in Nigeria, where news of killings, abductions, and kidnappings are common, Obi noted that the country has become one of the most insecure places in the world, requiring urgent action.
He specifically addressed the insecurity in the South East, urging the governors in the region to unite and address the problem collaboratively. He suggested that former governors could be invited to help devise solutions and emphasized the importance of working with security agencies and vigilante groups.
Regarding protests, Obi supported peaceful protests but condemned riots and the destruction of government property, as repairing these damages depletes scarce resources. He advocated for protests to be well-organized and focused on legitimate issues, not personal interests.
Obi also called for the release of those detained for participating in protests, including EndSARS protesters, asserting that people have the right to free expression and peaceful protest in a democratic country.
On the topic of forming a mega political party, Obi expressed that his main concern is improving the living conditions of poor Nigerians. He emphasized the importance of addressing issues like food prices, poverty, and economic opportunities rather than focusing solely on elections.
He stated that if forming a mega party could address these issues, he would support it. However, if it is merely for gaining power and continuing current consumption practices, he would oppose it.
