President Tinubu Blames Inherited Issues for Nigeria’s Insecurity, Calls for Comprehensive Reforms
FCT, Abuja – President Bola Tinubu attributed Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity, particularly in the northwest, to inherited security compromises. Speaking at a two-day security and peace summit organized by the Northwest Governors Forum in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme in Katsina state, Tinubu’s address was delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday, June 24, as reported by The Punch.
“The road to redeeming the security compromises we inherited was mapped out before we embarked on this journey,” said Shettima, on behalf of the President. “We realized that achieving the peace we seek necessitates addressing the historical injustices that have torn communities apart. We must also reverse the institutional frailties governing security and the economic dysfunctions that create vulnerabilities to crime. Additionally, we must counter the ideological mischief that has pervaded the discourse of peace and security in the region.”
President Tinubu advocated for increased local policing involvement, comprehensive police reform, and the establishment of better Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for security forces. He emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration among all security agencies to effectively capture those undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty, assuring Nigerians of improved security across the country, particularly in the northwest. Tinubu noted that the failure of security in Nigeria would have repercussions for the entire African continent.
