Presidency Clashes with Kwankwaso Over Kano State of Emergency
The Presidency has denied claims made by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), who said that the Federal Government is planning to declare a state of emergency in Kano State.
Kwankwaso made these accusations during an event to start building 82 kilometers of rural roads in his hometown, Madobi.
He claimed that the federal government was compromising security in Kano by refusing to withdraw the heavy security detail guarding the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
He also warned that the people of Kano would resist any efforts to undermine their local authorities.
In response, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga told The Nation that Kwankwaso’s claims were just rumors.
He clarified that the Federal Government cannot declare a state of emergency in any state without the involvement of the National Assembly, which is currently on break. Therefore, there are no such plans.
Additionally, Kano’s police commissioner, Ussain Gumel, stated that the police are duty-bound to protect all emirs and rejected claims of bias during the emirate crisis.
He mentioned that they have received and forwarded about five court orders to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice and are waiting for a response. He urged the public to remain patient and calm while awaiting the outcome from the relevant authorities.
