LP and Atiku Demand Action from Tinubu on Poverty Alleviation
Stop making excuses for inflicting multi-dimensional poverty on Nigerians- Atiku
The Labour Party (LP) expressed disappointment over President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments, which they felt mocked Nigeria’s poor.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated in an interview with Vanguard in Abuja that the President should remember his duty is to alleviate, not worsen, poverty.
Ifoh responded to President Tinubu’s remark that Nigerians aren’t the only ones suffering from poverty, saying it was disheartening to hear the President trivialize the severe hardship caused by his administration’s policies since taking office over a year ago.
Ifoh emphasized that even if Tinubu’s statement were true, it’s unnecessary to remind struggling Nigerians of their suffering, which government actions have worsened.
He criticized the administration for prioritizing luxury over reducing poverty, citing lavish expenditures on renovations and new jets for the Presidential fleet while schools and hospitals are in dire conditions and public servants are underpaid.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, through his Special Adviser Paul Ibe, echoed similar sentiments. He criticized Tinubu’s administration for lacking values and promoting insensitivity, nepotism, and corruption.
Atiku argued that instead of discussing known problems like banditry and terrorism, the President should focus on strategies to tackle them.
Atiku also blamed Tinubu’s poorly planned policies for worsening Nigeria’s multidimensional poverty, noting that these policies have deepened economic challenges.
He highlighted the administration’s lack of transparency, pointing out that despite claims to have ended subsidy payments, the government paid substantial subsidies in the past year and plans to continue this year. Atiku accused Tinubu of diverting funds and causing increasing poverty in the country.
