Nigerian Women Reach Out to Man After His Move to Canada, Sparking Online Debate on Relationship Expectations

A story shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a man to @wizarab10 has sparked a wave of reactions as it reveals the shifting dynamics in relationship expectations among some Nigerian women. The man, who recently relocated to Canada, recounted his surprise when several women who had previously rejected him in Nigeria suddenly reached out, expressing interest in a relationship.

The man noted that these women sent numerous messages, inquiring why he hadn’t been more persistent in pursuing them when he was still in Nigeria. One particularly ironic instance involved a woman who had previously told him she couldn’t manage a long-distance relationship (LDR) from Ogun to Oshogbo, but was now willing to consider an LDR despite his relocation to Canada.

In his words:
“Nigerian babes are funny. Moved to Canada recently and like 6 babes that rejected me back then are in my DM asking me why I didn’t put pressure then. One told me she can’t do LDR from Ogun to Oshogbo but now she’s ready for LDR. Different friendly match bookings when next I visit home.”

This prompted various reactions from netizens:

ManOfHonour shared a similar sentiment about the perceived connection between relocation (japa) and a better life: “To many Nigerian girls, japa is synonymous with a better life, so now they realize the better life you would have given them and regret not taking the opportunity when it came. Thus they rebound.”

Yemi: “Bro would see the difference between relationships in Nigeria and outside the shores of Nigeria. Majority of Nigerian women are not looking for love, but help. Always on survival mode. Leave Nigerian women alone.”

Prince Adebayo highlighted the financial expectations in relationships:
“God bless you!!! Most of them are looking for help and also a man who can help financially and they can settle down with. Even your Ex go come back!”

These reactions reflect a broader discussion about the motivations behind relationships and how financial stability and the prospect of a better life can influence romantic decisions. The story and its ensuing reactions underscore the complexities of relationships in different socioeconomic contexts, particularly in Nigeria.

Addelcares pointed out the impact of financial stability on relationship dynamics:
“It is what it is. Most of Nigerian ladies just want a successful man. The mentality of using relationships to escape poverty is beginning to kill our people.”
